It's that time of year again. Millions of basketball fans across the United States are gearing up for weeks of fast-paced competition to be crowned the next men's college basketball champion.
The annual tournament, also known as March Madness, hosted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which governs college sports in the United States, will officially begin later this week. It's one of the most anticipated sporting events in the United States, with more than 18 million people tuning in to watch the 2022 finale, when the Kansas City Jayhawks beat the North Carolina Tar Heels.
How are teams selected?
The 32 winners of the Division I playoffs automatically qualify for the so-called "March Madness" national championships. The NCAA selection committee then invites the 36 teams that were not automatically eligible to join.
How many teams are participating?
68 teams will compete in a single elimination round. But before the start of the first round, four teams, the so-called "top four", will be eliminated: the play-in round, which officially kicks off the tournament, begins on Tuesday.
The NCAA explains on its website that the "Top Four consists of eight teams, the four lowest automatic qualifying seeded teams, and the four lowest common seeded teams". These rankings are determined by the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, which numbers teams from 1 to 68. After the "top four" is completed, 64 teams will enter the first round starting on Thursday, 16th. Races are scheduled in several U.S. states, including Florida, California and New York.
Why is the race called "March Madness"?
According to the NCAA, the nickname was first used in 1939, the same year the first Division I men's basketball tournament was held, by an Illinois high school official named Henry Porter.
"But it didn't start appearing in the NCAA tournament until CBS broadcaster Brent Moosburg (a former Chicago-based sportswriter) used the term while covering the 1982 tournament," the association said.
"Since then, the term has become synonymous with the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament."
Which teams to beat in 2023?
There are currently four teams ranked No. 1 in their respective regional divisions: Kansas, Alabama, Houston and Purdue.
Oddsmakers agree with the NCAA selection committee that the No. 1 seed is the favorite with Houston 500-plus, Alabama 800-plus, Kansas 1,000-plus and Purdue 1,200-plus. "The No. 1 seed has won the NCAA Tournament in six of the past seven years," according to CBS Sports.
